Icon Exhibition

Icon Painting Programme 2019 - 2022

Exhibition, 2 - 12 November 2022

About

The works you see in this exhibition were created by students of The School of Traditional Arts during their three-year part-time course in icon painting, 2019–2022. In the context of the theology of the icon the students studied the techniques of egg tempera panel painting.

The programme, founded in 2009, runs for three years and consists of seven sessions a year, each of three days. Up to five hours a week home study is also expected.

The course is taught primarily by Aidan Hart in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. The skills and subjects taught include: pigment and panel preparation; gilding; techniques of egg tempera icon painting; theology of the icon; the relationship between iconography, church architecture and worship.

Twelve new students have been selected for the next programme which began in October.

If you are interested in applying for the next entries in 2025 please register your interest by contacting the School.
