Hanne Louise Svane
Orthodox Iconographer
AG Leventis Scholar
Egg Tempera
Hanne is an icon painter from Bergen, Norway. She felt drawn to the beauty of iconography after converting to the Orthodox Church and started to learn icon painting while living in the US. She finished the School’s Diploma in Icon Certificate Programme in 2022 and started as a PhD research student shortly thereafter. With her background in social anthropology, and as a Matushka (wife of a priest) of a growing Norwegian Orthodox community, she is interested in how iconography can communicate familiarity and belonging within the cultural context. Her research focuses on the relationship between regional and universal elements in iconography, using the icon screen as a lens to explore potentialities of using a visual language that speaks to a specific cultural context, while simultaneously communicating the universality and timelessness of the Orthodox Church.
