About

Basohli painting is known for its bold figures, imaginative compositions and symbolic use of primary colours. Bright reds and oranges, vibrant yellows, deep blues, strong outlines and vivid facial expressions are some of the features of this unique and beautiful style of Pahari painting.

This course will introduce the main features of Basohli style and its representation of figures and nature, using natural pigments and traditional Indian painting techniques.

Who is this course for?

All levels of ability and experience are welcome. You must be aged 18 or over to participate in our programmes.

What should I bring to class?

  • A paint palette with wells and 2 x glass jar.

  • Pointed, round watercolour brushes in sizes 0, 2, 4, and 6

All other materials, including paper, pigment, and an Indian miniature squirrel-hair brush will be provided.

Wear comfortable clothing that you do not mind getting slightly messy. Avoid wearing: Baggy clothing (especially sleeves); Loose jewellery; Short sleeve t-shirts (when there is a chance of contact with hazardous materials); High heels or open-toed shoes

Where will this course take place?

This course will take place at our studios at The Prince's Foundation School of Traditional Arts, 19-22 Charlotte Road, London EC2A 3SG.

Do you offer concessions?

Yes, we offer concessions for full-time students and Seniors/60+.

Concessions cannot be applied in retrospect. To receive a concession, please apply via our online form. We will then send you a discount code to use when booking your space.

Terms & Conditions

The School reserves the right to discontinue or suspend a Course up to fourteen (14) calendar days before the advertised start date of the Course. This course requires a minimum number of enrollments to run.

Our normal terms and conditions apply, with the addition of the following:

  • Please don't attend if you feel unwell or have COVID-19 symptoms. We will be happy to refund your fee, or put your fee towards a course on a future date in the next 12 months.

  • If we are unable to hold a session in person due to a change in conditions, e.g. another UK lockdown, this course cannot be held online.

Tutor Biography

Susana Marin

Dr Susana Marín has been a painter and musician since childhood. She trained in traditional Indian painting with masters of Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan and received her Doctoral Degree at the Prince’s School for her research into the living tradition of Pahari painting and its relevance in the 21st century. Her work has been exhibited in the United States, Europe and the Indian Subcontinent. She also gives workshops internationally and is committed to support the preservation and continuation of Pahari painting.
