Tuition fee policy

Introduction

Tuition fee rates apply for a full academic session beginning in September to July the following year. Fees are subject to annual revision and are due in full at the start of the academic year.

The School has a number of scholarships to allocate towards tuition fees. These scholarships for MA students will cover the full 2 years. For research students any scholarships will be re-assessed annually. The remaining payment of tuition fees not covered by the scholarships is the responsibility of the student and, in the event of a student’s personal sponsor (if any) failing to make payment, the student will be held personally liable for payment. Annual programme and course fees cover matriculation, tuition and one diet of examination for MA students. Tuition fees for research students cover matriculation and tuition only. For research students there will be an examination fee charged by UWTSD on final submission of their thesis for examination. This will be the responsibility of the research student to pay this

Annual revision of fees

Students should be aware that tuition fees may increase annually. However for students already enrolled the School will endeavour to keep the tuition fees at the rate that they enrolled for the duration of their studies.

Withdrawal from the School’s postgraduate courses

All students will be asked to pay 20% non-refundable deposit in July prior to the commencement of their studies unless they are in receipt of a full tuition fee scholarship from the School.

Students commencing their studies in the Autumn term who withdraw before 31 January will be liable for one third of the annual tuition fees. If they have paid the full annual tuition fee themselves or through a sponsor, the School will refund 2 thirds of the tuition fee. If the student is in receipt of the School’s scholarship they will not be entitled to any refund. The School will not ask the student to refund the School’s scholarship allocation.

Students who have started the Spring term and then have decided to withdraw before 30 April will be liable for 2 thirds of the tuition fee. If they have paid the full annual tuition fee themselves or through a sponsor, the School will refund one third of the tuition fee. If the student is in receipt of the School’s scholarship they will not be entitled to any refund. The School will not ask the student to refund the School’s scholarship allocation. If he/she withdraws after these dates, he/she will be liable for payment of the full session fees for the programme of studies and will not be entitled to a refund. If a student withdraws in the first couple of weeks of starting their studies, the School will not return the 20% non-refundable deposit but at the discretion of the School, any further tuition fees paid to the School may be considered for a refund with appropriate academic approval.

Full-time students who are admitted to these masters programmes but exit with an award of Diploma are liable for the appropriate full-time annual fee.

Authorised interruption of studies

No fees are chargeable in respect of periods of authorised interruption of studies of over 3 months.

Repeat year students

All students repeating a full year of study will be charged the applicable full-time fee. A re-examination/re-submission fee will be the responsibility of the student.

Research programme

Full-time study

MPhil Full-time candidates for the degree of MPhil pay a total of two full-time annual fees, irrespective of the period of prescribed study under supervision. Students who submit their thesis early are required to pay the remaining years’ fees on submission. Any student continuing study beyond the period for which annual fees are payable is required to pay one matriculation fee in the following academic year and then a continuation fee for every authorised extension until they submit their thesis. Continuation fees are charged pro rata for the full period of an approved extension.

PhD Full-time candidates for the degree of PhD pay a total of three or four full-time annual fees (as appropriate) for the period of prescribed study under supervision. Students who submit their thesis early are required to pay the remaining years’ fees on submission. Any student continuing study beyond the period for which annual fees are payable is required to pay one matriculation fee in the following academic year and then a continuation fee for every authorised extension until they submit their thesis. Continuation fees are charged pro rata for the full period of an approved extension.

Part-time study

MPhil Students pay a total of four part-time annual fees, irrespective of the period of prescribed study under supervision. Students who submit their thesis early are required to pay the remaining years’ fees on submission. Any student continuing study beyond the period for which annual fees are payable is required to pay one matriculation fee in the following academic year and then a continuation fee for every authorised extension until they submit their thesis. Continuation fees are charged pro rata for the full period of an approved extension.

PhD Students pay a total of six or eight part-time annual fees (as appropriate) for the period of prescribed study under supervision. Students who submit their thesis early are required to pay the remaining years’ fees on submission. Any student continuing study beyond the period for which annual fees are payable is required to pay one matriculation fee in the following academic year and then a continuation fee for every authorised extension until they submit their thesis. Continuation fees are charged pro rata for the full period of an approved extension.

Corrections and re-submission Under the Assessment Regulations for Research Degrees examiners can make a recommendation that a student must make minor corrections to their thesis within a specified period, up to 12 months, before the degree can be awarded. Students are required to pay a matriculation fee in these circumstances. If examiners recommend that a thesis requires substantial revision and a further oral examination, students are required to pay a matriculation fee and a resubmission fee.
