Strata Florida, Wales

The Prince’s Foundation is working with partners around the country to develop and deliver a variety of projects in celebration of His Royal Highness’ 70th Birthday in 2018.

Strata Florida (Ystrad Fflur), a former Cistercian abbey and adjacent 18th Century farm (Mynachlog Fawr) in the Welsh Uplands, is a focus of cultural, political, spiritual and natural heritage of international importance. It was once a centre of culture, religion and trade, with connections spreading far across the Welsh landscape. One of the foremost early Welsh historical sources, the Brut y Tywysogion, was written here and the site has many associations with Welsh culture and identity. Dafydd ap Gwilym, Wales’s most famous medieval poet, is buried in the churchyard, as are several medieval Princes of Wales.

His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, has always taken a very keen interest in Strata Florida Abbey and its future. Having acquired parts of the site at risk of dereliction, the Strata Florida Trust is ready to lead the revitalisation of this extraordinary place.
